Even NBC is branching out to video resumes/webumes.  I recently searched video resume news to find out what people are saying and this popped up.  I always thought that video webumes were catching on but now I know that it really is.  If NBC is starting to post about video webumes other people will follow suit.  Mind you this article only came out one week ago which is pretty amazing.

To really get your name out there and to get the employers knocking at your door you should really go to the job seeker’s section or if you are a recruiter and want to see what job seekers are doing on mywebume check out the recruiter’s section.

On a show called How I Met Your Mother a guy named Barry Stinson creates a video resume. This video is very viral and can be used to market oneself but the only thing I get from this is that he only talks about himself.  As a company I don’t see the value in this guy.  I could see that apparently he is awesome.

The one thing he does have going for him is that the video is very creative and it is a great marketing ploy…. This video takes away too much from what he can do and focuses solely on how “awesome” he is.

I would say that when you create a video webume you should be creative and you do want to attract your employer’s attention but you also want to do it in a little more professional manner.

I have been thinking about what jobs can use a video webume.  Finance and accounting jobs probably aren’t the ideal jobs to set your video webume up because those jobs aren’t about showcasing who you are those jobs are more for either who you know or what you know.

I do want to say sales, marketing, advertising, modeling, teaching, pr, to name a few, or any job where you will be in front of people and speaking having a video webume is very very useful. It not only shows a little bit of your creativity but also how well you can do in front of people.  The reason I am saying that if you can shoot a video webume, you can talk in front of people because most people who are camera shy will also be shy in front of people.

I have shown two people who have filmed a video webume and are very proud of them.  In the next couple weeks I will show some more and hopefully you will understand that these video webumes really show a person’s skills beyond the traditional resume.

A video resume done for a spanish speaking student.  A video resume really shows his ability to speak more than just one language.  I recommend to anyone that can speak multiple languages.  At mywebume they really have the ability to explain and shoot a great video webume. Check out this video webume done for Alan Alva who is a Spanish speaking student who knows multiple languages

I have been talking a lot about how to make one without truly showing how one is made.  Here is an example of how someone can create a video webume.  I helped direct and produce this video.  If you want to make one, it is not an easy task.  You can anticipate on spending at least 4-6 hours and sometimes they can take up to 8 hours.  A factor that needs to be considered is the time put into setting up.  Setting up is commonly overlooked but it is a vital aspect to the video. In James’s video webume we take the time to consider where we are going to shoot and to capture the best shot.

Take some time to analyze this video webume to be able to create your own.

The Benefits of using a Video Webume to Hire Someone

I truly believe in this economy that a simple resume and cover letter is old news. It’s time for an upgrade! The next wave in the job market is going to be a video webume.  It showcases a person on how they can talk, what they look like, it goes beyond a traditional webume/resume, it shows a person’s creativity, and it is a better way to explain yourself.  The way of the resume is going the way of the dinosaur.  It was a great beginning but now that there is a better option out there employers need to pick it up.  It’s something different but if someone can impress you with their video webume you know that their interview is going to be that much better.  If you are an employer and are prospecting people to hire or to get them a job a video webume is what you should be looking at hiring from.
From an employer’s standpoint if a prospective employee produces a video webume for a job it really shows how driven they are to get that job.  They aren’t taking the easy way out and coming up with a resume which can take an hour or so.  A video webume really shows determination.  To complete a successful video webume it should take the person 4-8 hours.  As an employer if you know someone took that much time into applying for a job you know they will be just as hard working for the job once they get hired.  From my experiences with making video webumes it is quite a task to accomplish and I wouldn’t do it unless I was very serious about a job.
I see it that any employer would give bonus points to anyone that would do a video webume.  The video webume is a great tool to get a job and to really show your determination.  If you would like to learn how to create a video check out my post on creating a video webume.  As always you can sign up at http://www.mywebume.com to get your video webume started and uploaded.

You are at the beginning of your trial.  You need to determine whether you need to either pay for a professional to film your webume or to film one yourself.  The benefits of a professional video webume are huge.  You get someone to use good lighting, good background, good camera, professional editing etc… Having a professional film your video webume gives you better direction as to how you want to position yourself for your employers.  Even though having a professional is great you can still do a phenomenal video webume by yourself.

Creating a video webume by yourself is a viable option.  Check out this article it explains all about creating your video webume.  An amateur video webume is an amazing way to show off your skills and creativity. When doing your own video webume you can save money and it is a good way of portraying yourself.

I would like to say that it is unnecessary to create a professional video webume.  The most important thing to remember when creating your video webume is to be professional and to portray yourself in a manner that will show you in way to get that job. With a well put together video webume it can show your creativity and your professionalism.

Prepping for your video webume is very important.  After the script is written you can’t just go into doing your video webume.  There are a few more steps you must do in order to actually start your video webume.

You need to have an appropriate background.  The background should be clean and white.  It should be clear of anything that would distract the employer/recruiter from you. Remove all the toys, sports equipment, posters, like I said anything that could potentially distract the employers attention away from you. Once your background is appropriate you now need to focus on your attite and your grooming.

Deciding on what to wear is key in giving a good first impression to your employers. Your outfit should resemble that of an interview.  I recommend wearing a suit and tie to your video webume.  It shows that you are professional and are ready to impress the hiring manager. Also when trying to impress the person that might be hiring you, you should be properly groomed. For males a good clean shaven face or a well manicured face. Don’t have a shaggy mop for a hair-do rather it is better to have a nice clean haircut or to have fixed your hair so that it impresses the employer.  For women you should not wear too much makeup or wear clothing that is too revealing.  How you dress and look is representative of you.

The final stage in preparation for the video webume is the script.  You should have the script already written out and all that is left is breaking the script down.  I recommend breaking it down into sections that can be easily memorized. Such as an introduction, experience, hobby, what your strengths & weaknesses are, and what can you offer to the company.  What you offer to the company is going to be your conclusion and how you are going to leave a lasting impression on your employer.

Preparation for the video webume is just as important as the actual implementation of the video webume.  So take this stage of your video webume very seriously so that you can show your employers that you are ready to tackle on any job.

In this new job market it is important to create separation between you and the next person.  It is very common to get an internship and build your resume.  However, this isn’t going to separate you from the competition.  In order to actually be able to compete in the new market a video Webume needs to be created. With a video Webume you can show not only your creative side, which does not get seen in a traditional resume, but also your presentation skills.

When an employer/hiring agency sees your resume or cover letter they only see one dimension to whom they might be hiring.  The employer/hiring agency sees what the person has done and their writing skills, which is very important because you shouldn’t be hired without the basics.  Now you need to take that resume to the next level and create a video Webume.  With this video Webume you show another facet, another dimension in fact, to the skills you can bring to the work place.

With the video Webume it needs to be creative yet professional.  It is important to not just present it where it is professional but to also show a piece of you that can’t be seen in your resume.

Not everyone has the resources to film a professional video Webume. However, anyone who has access to a video camera can create their own video Webume that have just as great an impression as a professional video resume by keeping these pointers in mind.

First of you need to find an appropriate background.  This doesn’t have to be complex.  Your background can be very simple. It can be as simple as a white background, it all just depends what you are trying to convey through your video Webume.  After you have found a good background you need to setup your camera equipment.

Choosing an angle is not dependent on which side of your face you’re most comfortable with. It’s best to keep the camera at eye level and look straight directly into the camera.

Once you have your camera equipment setup and found a nice looking background, the number one thing to keep in mind is lighting. Good lighting is an essential part of your video. Make sure you can be seen clearly and not hidden in shadows. Also keep in mind that too much light can over expose your face, making it distracting for the viewer.

Speak clearly and slowly. To help you with the thought process, write down what you’re going to say first before you step in front of the camera, but DO NOT read off of the paper once video recording commences. Be confident!

Remember that video Webumes are 90% video and 10% sound.

Your video is as good as none if the sound isn’t great. Find a location with low or no noise, free from door creeks, barking dogs, screaming pedestrians, or refrigerator hums.
If you can’t avoid noise such as central air conditioning, or furnace noise, then do the best you can to be heard clearly.

Music is not an essential part of your video Webume. Music at times can enhance your video, but can be too distracting if used improperly. Use at your own risk. (Music not owned by you is strictly prohibited, but you can use a loop which is under 20 seconds) So it’s best to avoid adding music completely unless you know how to edit the music properly to loop under 20 seconds.

Keep your video Webumes under two minutes, 1 minute is preferred.  Think of it like an actual resume where you are supposed to be as succinct as possible, you want to get your point across with as little words as possible.

Be sure to dress in professional attire and present yourself as you would in a personal one on one interview.
